Alayna joined Rush Creek Growers full-time in 2026. She quickly stepped into the role of Annual Grower, ordering, tracking, and shipping our Speciality Annual and Foliage categories. She is an instinctive morale booster and her laughter can be heard ringing through the greenhouses. It is clear that she will move into other leadership roles the longer she is here.
The 2027 staff musings prompt is to write about a plant we believe is a underrated or unsung hero.
Alayna: If you had asked me about Bidens when I started at Rush Creek earlier this year I would’ve said, “What are Bidens?” They were not on my radar but I thought they were cute when we potted them up for sale this spring. Cute enough that I brought some home and put them in the leftover space in my garden, not expecting much. Boy was I wrong! They have filled out the space and they are THRIVING, acting as the cutest annual groundcover you’ve ever seen. They’ve continued to flower well into summer, and the new blooms are so vibrant that I don’t even feel compelled to deadhead the spent blooms. My favorites are Golden Empire and Pretty in Pink, two happy shades that play well with each other. Listen, I’m not telling you what to do… But I AM heavily suggesting that you consider Bidens while planning next year’s garden.
